Why Being a Girl is Expensive (What Stores Won't Tell Us)👀💸

pink tax, expensive, girlhood, shopping addiction

As a girl, I KNOW the struggle that many others also face. All the trending brands and cute clothes are EXPENSIVE. The average prom dress is anywhere from $130-$350 and that's CRAZY. The average Sephora run is buying two things and your total will be over $50. Even lotion and soap are anywhere from $9-$12. Men's products are around 13% cheaper than women's products, strictly because they are marketed toward men. For example, the same brand of Gillette disposable razors for men cost $6.99-$9.99, meanwhile women's Gillette razors cost anywhere from $6.99-$14.99. Almost DOUBLE the price, and the razors are usually similar enough that a lot of women actually use men's razors for a closer shave. Why is this? THE PINK TAX.

If you don't know, the pink tax is the extra amount women will pay for products marketed specifically to their gender compared to the same products marketed towards men. Clothes, razors, soap, toiletries, even services cost more for women. There is also the theory that just because something is pink, it costs more because the stores know that more people will buy the pink one even if it's more money. Which is totally understandable, as a girl, everything is better in pink. But in the economy we're in today upcharging $5+ for pink dye is crazy when I can get it for cheaper in a less pretty color that serves the same purpose.

Don't get me started on feminine products or bras and bikinis. Tell me a why an actually decent bra is always over $50 and pads and tampons are literally disposable and can't be reused. They are over $15 for one pack that will not even last two period cycles. Don't even bother with a cute bikini set because the nice-quality ones are $60-$90 for a PIECE not even the bottoms and top, just ONE. The amount of fabric in a bikini is equivalent to a string, so why is it so expensive????? I would love to support small businesses and handmade clothes and jewelry, but for the price it costs I literally might go broke.

Pink products always sell out faster and are definitely more desirable. Even if the product is mid, people love the packaging. From one girl to another, next time you go shopping, make sure it's something you will use and not just get it because it's cute or the packaging is appealing. Stores really know how to get us, and because of this our "shopping addiction" is worse than it seems since everything is priced higher.
